Read this before testing subject lines

If your open rates are below 20%, the problem is deliverability - not subject lines. Unverified email lists produce bounce rates that trigger Gmail and Outlook spam filtering, which routes emails to spam before the subject line is ever seen. Calculate your bounce risk and verify your list first before optimising subject lines.

What Works in 2026

Keep it under 6 words

Short subject lines display fully on mobile and look less like marketing emails. 1-4 words often outperform longer alternatives by 20%+.

Personalise the first email

Including the company name or a specific trigger increases open rates 15-20%. For follow-ups, use RE: + original subject instead.

No exclamation marks or all-caps

These are the fastest path to the spam folder. Never use URGENT, FREE, or percentage discounts in subject lines.

Lower-case looks human

All lower-case subject lines consistently outperform title-case in cold email - they look like internal company emails, not marketing.

No emoji ever

Emoji hurt deliverability in B2B, especially for Microsoft 365 recipients. Remove them from every subject line.

One question only, if any

Question subject lines work, but only one question and only when it is genuinely relevant - not manipulative clickbait.

General B2B Outreach

High-performer templates for prospecting to any B2B audience. Keep personalisation variables like [Company] - replace with the actual company name.

4 Post on scaling from 10 to 50 reps
5 [Company] expanding to [market] - timing?
6 Your recent [award/recognition]

The factor that beats every subject line

Subject line optimisation has a ceiling. The maximum open rate you can achieve from a perfect subject line is around 60% for cold email. The minimum open rate from a bad list - even with a perfect subject line - is near 0%, because the emails go to spam before the subject is ever seen.

List quality determines whether your emails are delivered to the inbox. Subject lines determine whether they are opened once delivered. Do the first thing first.
