Domain age is one of the most misunderstood factors in cold email deliverability. New domains get filtered more aggressively - but warmup activity matters far more than raw age. This guide explains what domain age actually signals, the minimum age thresholds for different send volumes, and how to get a new domain campaign-ready as quickly as safely possible.
Domain age tells Gmail and Outlook “this domain has existed for X days.” What they actually want to know is: does this domain have a track record of legitimate email behaviour? That track record is built by warmup activity - sending emails, getting them replied to, not generating spam complaints. A 1-year-old domain that was dormant for 11 months performs like a new domain. A 90-day-old domain with 60 days of active warmup performs like an established sender.
“This domain has existed for X days.” Older = less likely to be a throwaway spam domain. Gmail and Outlook are more suspicious of domains registered in the last 14 days. Beyond the initial “too new” flag, raw age is a weak signal compared to actual sending behaviour.
Positive engagement: emails being replied to, moved out of spam, marked as important. This is the strong signal that builds sender reputation. A new domain can build this reputation in 4-8 weeks of active warmup regardless of its registration date.
Buying a domain and waiting 6 months without sending anything does not build reputation - it just ages the domain. Age without warmup activity gives you a slightly lower suspicion floor at most. Do not confuse waiting with warming.

Set SPF record (v=spf1 include:_spf.google.com ~all for Google Workspace). Set DKIM (enable in Google Workspace/M365 admin, then publish the DNS key). Set DMARC (p=none initially: v=DMARC1; p=none; rua=mailto:[email protected]). Verify all three pass on MXToolbox before sending anything.
Connect the new inbox to your warmup tool (Instantly, Lemwarm, Warmbox). Set daily volume to 10-15 emails. Enable reply simulation and spam rescue. Do not touch the campaign module yet.
Check Google Postmaster Tools - domain should start appearing. Check warmup tool dashboard: positive engagement rate should be 70%+. If inbox placement is showing red, investigate before proceeding.
Domain is ready for very low volume campaigns (10-20/day to a verified list). Keep warmup running at 25-40/day in parallel. Monitor Postmaster domain reputation - should be “High” within 30-45 days of warmup.
