Media / Publishing 25-33% 30-38% Newsletter open rate exceeds cold due to subscriber opt-in

* Cold email open rates assume a warmed domain, verified list, SPF/DKIM/DMARC configured, and Apple MPP filtering awareness. MPP inflates open rates by 10-20% for consumer email domains.

What Actually Moves Open Rates

1

List quality (most impactful)

Invalid email addresses generate hard bounces. Bounce rates above 2% cause Gmail and Outlook to route your emails to spam. Spam placement = 0% open rate. Verified lists (via BounceZero) consistently produce 30-50% higher open rates because emails actually reach the inbox.

2

Domain reputation

A new or damaged domain has a low sender score. ISPs route low-score senders to spam. Warmup + list hygiene rebuild this. Takes 30-90 days to recover from a bounce spike.

3

Subject line (4th most impactful)

Subject line affects open rate only after the email reaches the inbox. A great subject line on a spam-filtered email still gets 0% opens. Optimize list quality, domain health, and authentication first.

4

Send time

Tuesday to Thursday, 9-11am recipient time zone consistently outperforms weekend and Monday sends. Difference: 5-10% open rate variance at best. Do not optimize time before fixing list quality.

5

From name

Personalized from names ("Alex from BounceZero" vs "BounceZero") improve open rates 5-15%. Consistent from names build recognition over multiple touches.
