Email verification is worth it when the cost of a bounce is higher than the cost of a check, which is almost always for cold or aged lists. A check costs a fraction of a cent; a bounce costs deliverability for your whole domain once the rate passes about 2%. On lists not checked in 90 days we typically find 14.5% invalid on business lists, so for a 10,000-address send, verification prevents roughly 1,450 bounces for a few dollars. It is not worth it for a small, recent, double-opt-in list that already bounces under 1%.
The price of a verification check is easy to see: a fraction of a cent. The price of a bounce is hidden, which is why people underrate it. A single bounce does little. A bounce rate over about 2%, the working limit most sending platforms enforce, tips the mailbox providers into filtering your mail to spam, and that applies to every message, including the ones to good addresses. The cost is not the one bounce; it is the campaign that quietly stops reaching anyone.
Spam complaints compound it. Google and Microsoft publish a 0.3% complaint threshold, and dead or scraped addresses are the ones most likely to be spam traps or to generate complaints. Verification removes the addresses that trigger both problems before they touch your sending domain.
| Your list | Typical invalid rate | Verify? | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cold or purchased, any age | 15 to 40% | Always | A third of it may bounce; this is the clearest case |
| CRM data over 12 months old | 20 to 35% | Yes | Decay alone has made a quarter of it undeliverable |
| Signups from 3+ months ago | 10 to 20% | Yes | People close accounts and change jobs |
| Recent double opt-in, mailed weekly | Under 1% | Not usually | Already clean; verifying adds little |
| A list you are about to import anywhere | Unknown | Yes, sample it | A 200-row sample tells you which case you are in |
Usually, yes. Most verifiers, BounceZero included, give a free monthly allowance, in our case 100 checks a month, with no card required. That is enough to verify a 100-address sample of your list and see the real invalid rate before you pay for anything. If the sample comes back 2% invalid, you may not need to buy; if it comes back 25%, the decision makes itself.
The thing a free trial should let you see is the honest result breakdown, including catch-all and unknown. A tool that hides unknowns behind a "valid" label will make any list look clean. Checking a sample is how you test the tool as much as the list.
For cold, purchased or aged lists, almost always: a check costs a fraction of a cent, while a bounce rate over 2% sends your whole campaign to spam. On lists not checked in 90 days we typically find 14.5% invalid on business lists, so verification prevents hundreds or thousands of bounces for a few dollars. For a small, recent, double-opt-in list already under 1% bounce, it adds little.
Yes. BounceZero gives every account 100 free checks a month with no card required, and most competitors offer a free allowance too. That is enough to verify a sample of your list and see the real invalid rate before paying. Use the trial to check both the list and whether the tool reports unknowns honestly.
A fraction of a cent per address in bulk. BounceZero starts at 2,000 credits for $6 and the per-credit price drops with volume, down to well under a tenth of a cent at the top tier. Credits never expire and unknown results are not charged. The free tier covers 100 checks a month.
When your list is small, recently collected through double opt-in, and already bounces under 1% on every send. In that case the addresses have not had time to decay and there is little for a verifier to catch. Everyone else, verify before you send.
Indirectly but decisively. It does not make your content better, but it removes the invalid addresses that push your bounce rate over the threshold where mailbox providers start filtering you to spam. Keeping bounces low is a precondition for landing in the inbox at all.
Verify a 100-address sample free and see the real invalid rate before you decide. No card, unknowns never charged.
