AOL is a Freemail (Yahoo platform). Across 33,275 AOL addresses verified by BounceZero between April and October 2026, 17.9% were invalid, 24.7% catch-all, 19.9% unknown and 11.0% confirmed valid. Catch-all and unknown together mean a large share cannot be confirmed.
Every AOL address BounceZero verified for customers between April and October 2026, beside the corpus benchmarks. The remainder of each row to 100% is risky and role results.
| Segment | Addresses | Invalid | Catch-all | Unknown | Confirmed valid |

| All non-freemail domains (business and ISP) | 6,514,884 | 14.5% | 2.3% | 27.0% | 32.6% |
| Business domains only (consumer ISP and freemail excluded) | 1,269,919 | 22.9% | 9.4% | 22.5% | 40.3% |
| All freemail | 1,415,154 | 17.6% | 1.1% | 2.1% | 74.0% |
Non-freemail includes consumer ISP mailboxes; a business-only cut is on the benchmarks page. Method and every other cut: Lead List Quality Benchmarks 2026. Risky and role on the AOL row: 26.5%.
AOL runs on the Yahoo platform and shows its signature: a quarter catch-all, a fifth unknown, under a fifth confirmed invalid and only about one in ten confirmed valid. The catch-all share is the largest of any freemail provider in the corpus.
AOL was the dominant US consumer internet brand of the 1990s and its mail now runs on Yahoo's platform, inheriting Yahoo's catch-all style accepts and probe throttling. The addresses belong to long-standing consumers, often older, and they turn up on US lists compiled from public records and charity donor files. AOL recipients are protected by the same complaint filtering as Yahoo, and a high bounce or complaint rate on this segment damages reputation at both.
On confirmed-invalid rate, AOL ranks 13 of 29 providers in the corpus, just behind Luukku at 18.2%, ahead of Hotmail at 16.5%.
On unknown rate, AOL ranks 14 of 29 providers in the corpus, just behind AT&T at 26.4%, ahead of SFR at 16.8%.
On confirmed-valid share, AOL ranks 22 of 29 providers in the corpus, just behind Xtra (Spark) at 11.2%, ahead of Optimum at 6.0%.
How to read these rates: they are BounceZero's probe outcomes on customer lists over April to October 2026, not a census of AOL mailboxes. Unknown and catch-all measure what verification could not confirm, which depends on the provider's gateway policy during the window as much as on the addresses. The lists are the ones customers chose to upload, so segments dominated by a few large uploads carry their age and source. Method and limitations: benchmarks page.
About one in 5 AOL addresses cannot be confirmed either way. That is gateway behaviour, not a verdict; route those contacts to phone or LinkedIn and re-check after a week.
17.9% of AOL addresses are confirmed invalid, above the 14.5% seen across non-freemail lists. Delete them; there is nothing to re-check.
Catch-all is the defining trait here: 24.7% of AOL addresses accept anything, so finder guesses look valid and bounce later. Hold them out of cold sequences entirely.
Confirmed valid is 11.0%. Send to that slice from the primary domain and treat the rest of the AOL segment as unreachable by cold email.
Note the risky and role share: 26.5% of AOL results landed there, which the four headline columns do not show. Read risky as 'deliverable but with a flag' and test it at low volume before trusting it.
Catch-all AOL addresses cannot be cleared by verification. Send to them only from a secondary domain at low volume, and treat any AOL-heavy list as old consumer data.
Role addresses such as info@ and sales@ make up 0.0% of AOL addresses in the corpus. Role addresses are rare here, as expected for a mailbox provider.
17.9% of 33,275 AOL addresses verified by BounceZero between April and October 2026 were confirmed invalid, against 14.5% across non-freemail domains and 17.6% across freemail.
19.9%. Unknown means the mailbox could not be confirmed either way, usually because the gateway deferred the probe. BounceZero refunds unknown results; re-check after a week or use a second channel.
Partly: 24.7% of AOL addresses sat behind a catch-all accept, so the server took any address and the mailbox could not be confirmed.
11.0% confirmed valid at verification time. Keep bounces under 2% and complaints under 0.3% on the send, and re-verify the segment before every send.
