Telefónica: verification results against the benchmarks

Why Telefónica looks like this

Telefónica consumer addresses were issued with Terra and early Movistar broadband and most are no longer in use. Four in ten verify as invalid, the highest confirmed-invalid rate of any large ISP in the corpus. The gateway answers clearly, so the number is reliable.

Telefónica issued these addresses to Spanish broadband customers in the Terra and early Movistar years and later encouraged migration to other mailboxes, which is why so many are closed. Spanish B2B lists that include telefonica.net were typically compiled from company registers and directories where sole traders listed a personal ISP address. Spain's LSSI requires prior consent for commercial email to individuals, and the regulator AEPD enforces it, so the surviving addresses are rarely a lawful cold target.

Where Telefónica sits among providers

On confirmed-invalid rate, Telefónica ranks 5 of 29 providers in the corpus, just behind Windstream at 49.6%, ahead of Live.nl at 32.8%.

On unknown rate, Telefónica ranks 17 of 29 providers in the corpus, just behind Hotmail Netherlands at 8.7%, ahead of Bbox (Bouygues Telecom) at 5.5%.

On confirmed-valid share, Telefónica ranks 9 of 29 providers in the corpus, just behind Windstream at 50.2%, ahead of SFR at 42.2%.

How to read these rates: they are BounceZero's probe outcomes on customer lists over April to October 2026, not a census of Telefónica mailboxes. Unknown and catch-all measure what verification could not confirm, which depends on the provider's gateway policy during the window as much as on the addresses. The lists are the ones customers chose to upload, so segments dominated by a few large uploads carry their age and source. Method and limitations: benchmarks page.

Reading each result on Telefónica

Unknown

Telefónica rarely returns unknown. When it does, re-check once; a second unknown usually means a dormant mailbox.

Invalid

42.8% confirmed invalid is far above the 14.5% business average. A list with many Telefónica addresses was compiled a long time ago.

Catch-all

Catch-all is negligible on Telefónica (0.0%); when this provider does return valid, the mailbox accepted the probe itself rather than a blanket accept.

Confirmed valid

48.5% of Telefónica addresses confirmed as deliverable at verification time and can go straight to the primary sequence, with a re-check before every send.

What to do with Telefónica addresses on a list

Expect to discard close to half of telefonica.net addresses. Lists that carry many of them are old; verify the whole list before paying for it, not just this segment.

Role addresses such as info@ and sales@ make up 0.0% of Telefónica addresses in the corpus. Role addresses are rare here, as expected for a mailbox provider.

Frequently asked questions

What percentage of Telefónica email addresses are invalid?

42.8% of 159,794 Telefónica addresses verified by BounceZero between April and October 2026 were confirmed invalid, against 14.5% across non-freemail domains and 17.6% across freemail.

How many Telefónica addresses return unknown, and what does that mean?

8.0%. Unknown means the mailbox could not be confirmed either way, usually because the gateway deferred the probe. BounceZero refunds unknown results; on Telefónica it is rare enough to re-check once and move on.

Is Telefónica a catch-all domain?

Not in practice: 0.0% of Telefónica addresses returned catch-all, so a valid verdict means the mailbox exists.

What share of Telefónica addresses are safe to email?

48.5% confirmed valid at verification time. Keep bounces under 2% and complaints under 0.3% on the send, and re-verify the segment before every send.
