What Is a Cold Lead?

A cold lead is a contact who matches your target profile but has had no interaction with your company and has shown no signal of interest. Cold leads are reached through cold email, calls and social outreach, and they close at well under 1% per email. They are worked in volume, which makes list quality decisive: at scale, an unverified cold list is the fastest way to lose a sending domain.

How it is measured and used

Cold outreach is measured per hundred contacts: deliverability, open rate (unreliable since 2021), reply rate, positive reply rate, meetings. Guardrails are bounce rate under 2% and complaint rate under 0.3% per domain. A cold lead that replies, even negatively, moves to warm.

The cold outreach guide and the deliverability checklist cover the mechanics; the data step is always the same: verify, route by result, send only to confirmed valid from the primary domain.

Example with numbers

A cold campaign targets 3,000 marketing managers. Verified list: 2,250 valid sent, 2% replies, 0.5% positive, 11 meetings. The 750 unverified rows that were held would have added 400 bounces, pushed the domain past the 2% line, and cut deliverability on the 2,250 that could have replied.
