What Is an Outbound Lead?

An outbound lead is a person or company that matches your ideal customer profile but has not contacted you; you identify them through a database, LinkedIn or a trigger event and reach out first. Outbound converts at a fraction of inbound rates, under 1% per cold email, and depends entirely on data that someone else assembled: finder and database exports run 10 to 25% invalid on the day they land, so every outbound list is verified before the first send.

How it is measured and used

Outbound is measured by reply rate, positive reply rate and meetings booked per hundred contacts, with bounce rate and spam complaint rate as the guardrails. A 2% bounce rate or a 0.3% complaint rate on a sending domain triggers throttling at the major mailbox providers, which is why list quality is the first number an outbound team checks.

The outbound playbook sets out the sequence from profile to list build, verification, domain setup, sequencing and reporting.

Example with numbers

An outbound team builds a 6,000-contact list from a database export. Verified: 4,500 valid, 150 catch-all, 800 unknown, 550 invalid. The 4,500 are sequenced across three domains at 150 a day each; the 950 flagged go to LinkedIn. Reply rate on the verified set is 7%, bounce rate 0.4%, and the domains hold.
