What Is Prospecting?

Prospecting is the activity of identifying companies and people who fit your target profile, finding a way to reach them, and starting a conversation that may become a sale. It covers research, list building, enrichment, verification and the first touches by email, phone and social. Its output is prospects and, eventually, opportunities. Every prospecting method runs through the same data step: the contact channel has to work, and finder and database exports run 10 to 25% invalid until verified.

How it is measured and used

Prospecting is measured by activity (contacts reached), efficiency (reply and meeting rate per hundred), and outcome (opportunities created). The efficiency metrics are where data quality shows: bounces reduce the reachable set, and a throttled domain reduces delivery on the rest.

The prospecting tools roundup sets out the stack by stage, from research through enrichment and verification to sequencing.

Example with numbers

A two-person team prospects 1,500 contacts a month across email and LinkedIn. With verification in the workflow they reach 1,180 by email at a 6% reply rate and 320 by LinkedIn at 9%, producing about 100 conversations and 20 opportunities. Without it, 210 bounces a month would have cost them a domain by the second quarter.
