A trigger event is a change at a target company or in a contact's situation that creates a timely reason to reach out: a funding round, a hiring spike, a new executive, a product launch, an office move, a regulatory change, or a contact changing jobs. Outreach that references a real trigger replies at two to three times the rate of generic cold email. One trigger comes from your own data: a verified address that turns invalid usually means the person has moved, and the move is the event.
Triggers are detected from news feeds, job boards, funding databases, LinkedIn changes and technographic scans, and scored by relevance to the product. The lag matters: a funding announcement is a trigger for about two weeks before every vendor has used it.
The job-change trigger from re-verification is under-used. A quarterly re-check of a database surfaces every contact whose address died since the last run; finding them at the new company, where they often buy what they used before, is one of the highest-converting outbound plays.
A quarterly re-verification of 20,000 contacts finds 1,100 newly invalid. A finder locates 640 of them at new companies within a week; verified, 500 are confirmed. A sequence referencing the move and the previous relationship replies at 14%, double the team's cold average.
