What Is List Decay?

List decay is the gradual loss of deliverable addresses from a list as people change jobs, companies merge or close, and mailboxes are retired. B2B lists lose roughly 22% of their addresses a year, about 2% a month, so a list verified in January is one fifth dead by December with every badge still showing. Consumer lists decay more slowly but accumulate abandoned mailboxes instead.

How it is measured and used

Decay is measured by re-verifying the same list at intervals and recording the share that moved from valid to invalid. The list decay study tracks monthly loss by list type. The rate is not uniform: sales and marketing roles move faster than finance or operations, and startups churn staff faster than public bodies.

The offset is cadence. Quarterly re-verification of active records keeps the invalid share under about 6% between checks, well inside the 2% bounce threshold once the invalid rows are removed before each send. Annual re-verification does not.

Example with numbers

A 50,000-record database is verified in January at 95% valid. Left alone, by July roughly 11% has decayed and a send to the whole base bounces at 10%. Re-verified in April and July, each send goes out at under 1% bounce, and the 5,500 addresses that failed are flagged as job-change triggers rather than silently wasting sends.
