A suppression list is the set of email addresses a sender must exclude from future sends: people who unsubscribed or complained, addresses that hard-bounced, legal opt-outs, current customers who should not receive prospecting, and competitors. Every sending platform applies it automatically before a campaign goes out. Verification results feed it directly: addresses that return invalid are suppressed so they are never retried, and the list grows at about the 2% a month rate at which B2B addresses decay.
A suppression list is measured by completeness, whether every source of opt-outs reaches it within a day, and by application, whether every sending tool reads the same list. Teams running several sequencers and an ESP often hold three partial lists, which is how a complainer gets emailed twice.
Hard-bounce suppression is reactive; verification is proactive. Running the list through a verifier before the send puts the invalid addresses on the suppression list before they bounce, which is the difference between a 0.5% and a 10% bounce rate on the same data.
An agency runs eight client domains through one sequencer. A shared suppression list of 46,000 addresses, built from unsubscribes, complaints and quarterly verification results, is applied to every campaign. Complaint rate across the agency runs at 0.04% and no client domain has been throttled in a year.
