Intent data is behavioural evidence that a company or person is actively researching a problem your product solves. First-party intent comes from your own properties: pricing page visits, documentation reads, trial usage, replies. Third-party intent comes from outside: review-site activity, content consumption across publisher networks, job postings and funding events. First-party signals are rarer and far more predictive; third-party signals cover more accounts but identify the company, not the person, so they still need a reachable contact.
Intent is scored per account over a rolling window, usually seven to thirty days, with a surge threshold that flags accounts whose research spikes. First-party intent feeds lead scoring directly; third-party intent usually triggers prospecting into the account, which means finding and verifying contacts there.
The weak link is the contact step. A surging account is worth nothing if the three addresses a finder returns for it bounce. Finder exports run 10 to 25% invalid, so an intent-triggered play without verification wastes its best signal on the worst data.
A third-party feed flags 40 companies researching "email list cleaning" in a week. A finder returns 120 contacts across them; verification confirms 84, holds 14 catch-all and 9 unknown, and drops 13 invalid. The 84 go into a sequence the same day while the intent is current; at a 9% reply rate that is seven conversations from one week's signal.
