What Is a Prospect?

A prospect is a lead that a salesperson has qualified against the target profile and chosen to pursue. The vocabulary runs suspect (fits the profile, no contact), lead (some signal or match), prospect (qualified and being worked), opportunity (a deal with a value and a stage). A prospect record should carry a working channel, the person's role and the reason they were qualified; in practice one prospect in seven on an unverified list carries an address that will bounce.

How it is measured and used

Prospects are counted per rep and per segment, with the conversion from prospect to opportunity as the measure of qualification quality. A rep with many prospects and few opportunities is qualifying loosely or working dead data.

The sales prospecting guide ranks the methods for turning leads into prospects by return, and the techniques page gives reply-rate ranges per channel.

Example with numbers

A rep selects 200 prospects from a database for the month. Verified first: 148 valid, 12 catch-all, 25 unknown, 15 invalid. She sequences the 148 by email and works the 37 flagged by phone and LinkedIn, producing 14 opportunities, a 7% conversion. The 15 invalid never cost her a send.
