An ideal customer profile is a description of the company, not the person, that gains the most from your product and is most likely to buy, renew and refer: industry, size, geography, revenue band, technology stack and the trigger that creates the need. It is built from closed-won and churned accounts, not from aspiration, and it filters every lead source before a single email is sent. A list that is 80% fit and 98% reachable outperforms one that is 95% fit and 70% reachable.
The profile is derived by comparing the attributes of customers who expanded against those who churned. The attributes that separate them become filters in prospecting databases and weights in lead scoring. A profile that fits every company is not a profile.
Geography belongs in the ICP for a data reason as well as a commercial one. Bounce and unknown rates differ sharply by country: in the 2026 corpus .au lists ran 36.5% invalid and .de lists returned 41% unknown because of gateway refusals. A profile that targets Germany needs a phone-first channel plan; one that targets Australia needs heavy verification.
A verification vendor finds its best accounts are agencies and SaaS companies with 10 to 200 staff that send cold email at volume. Prospecting filters set to that profile produce 2,100 companies in the UK. Verified exports from the database return 83% confirmed valid, better than the 65% .uk corpus average, because mid-size firms keep tidy address patterns.
