What Is a Buyer Persona?

A buyer persona is a description of a person inside a target company: their role, what they are measured on, the problem your product removes for them, the objections they raise and the words they use. Where the ideal customer profile answers "which companies", the persona answers "who inside them". Most B2B products need two to four personas: the user who feels the pain, the manager who owns the budget, and sometimes a technical gatekeeper.

How it is measured and used

Personas are built from customer interviews, support tickets, sales call notes and the job titles on closed-won deals. They become title filters in prospecting tools and message variants in sequences. A persona without a title list cannot be prospected; a title list without a persona produces generic copy.

Titles decay as fast as addresses. People change roles roughly as often as they change companies, so a persona-targeted list built from a database six months old carries both a dead-address risk and a wrong-level risk. Verify the address and re-check the title before a sequence starts.

Example with numbers

An email verification vendor runs three personas: the growth marketer who owns the sending domain, the sales development lead who owns reply rates, and the founder at small agencies who owns both. Each gets a different first line; the same product fact, that 10 to 25% of finder exports bounce, is framed as domain risk, lost replies, or wasted agency hours respectively.
