A sales pipeline is the set of open opportunities, arranged by stage from first qualified contact through evaluation, proposal and negotiation to close, with a value and a probability at each stage. Its total weighted value is the forecast. Teams target pipeline coverage of three to four times the quarter's quota. Pipeline hygiene removes dead deals; part of that is re-verifying the contacts on deals that have stalled, since a stalled deal often means the champion has left.
Pipeline is measured by stage count and value, conversion between stages, average deal size, cycle length and coverage ratio. Stage definitions must be exit criteria, what has to be true to leave the stage, or every rep moves deals on a different basis.
The data link is job change. A B2B address has roughly a 22% chance of going dead in a year; on a six-month cycle that is one champion in nine. A quarterly re-verification of contacts on open opportunities catches the move and reopens the deal through the champion's successor or at their new company.
A pipeline holds 80 opportunities worth $640,000 weighted. Re-verification of primary contacts finds nine addresses dead. Six deals are revived through a new contact at the account, two are closed lost, one follows the champion to a new employer and becomes a fresh opportunity. The forecast drops by $40,000 and becomes believable.
