What Is Waterfall Enrichment?

Waterfall enrichment is a method that sends each record to a sequence of data providers, one after another, and stops at the first that returns a result. Tools such as Clay orchestrate the chain. It raises the find rate for emails to 80 to 92%, well above any single provider, but the first answer is not necessarily the right one: a wrong early result ends the search, so accuracy sits at 70 to 80% and every output needs verification.

How it is measured and used

The chain is ordered by cost and expected accuracy for the segment, cheapest reliable source first. Each step records which provider answered, so the output carries a source column that can be scored later: if provider three bounces twice as often as provider one, it moves down the chain.

The economic point is that waterfall spend compounds. Ten providers at a few cents each per lookup add up; running verification at the end, at a fraction of a cent per check on bulk pricing, is the cheapest step in the chain and the one that decides whether the rest was worth paying for.

Example with numbers

A 2,000-contact list runs through a five-source waterfall. Source one answers 55%, two adds 18%, three 9%, four 4%, five 2%: 88% found. Verification of the 1,760 results confirms 1,300, flags 180 catch-all and 110 unknown, and rejects 170 invalid, most of them from sources three to five. The chain is reordered and the two weakest sources are dropped.
