Data enrichment is the process of adding or refreshing fields on a lead or company record from external sources, so that a bare email or domain becomes a record with company size, industry, job title, phone number and the rest. It runs at the form, on import, or on a schedule. Enriched email addresses are inferred or recalled from a store, not confirmed live, and across the leading providers 10 to 25% of returned addresses are invalid at the moment they are returned.
Enrichment is measured by match rate (what share of input records got a result) and field fill rate (which fields came back). Accuracy is rarely published and should be sampled: enrich 200 records you already know and count the errors. Providers charge per record or per field, so match rate also sets the cost per useful record.
The one field that can be checked live is the email. A verifier confirms the mailbox now; the enrichment provider confirmed it, at best, when the record was indexed. The enrichment tools roundup lists the vendors and where the verification step sits for each.
A CRM holds 12,000 contacts with email only. Enrichment matches 9,800 and fills title and company size on 8,900. The 2,100 records whose email the enricher also replaced are verified: 1,700 valid, 160 catch-all, 110 unknown, 130 invalid. The invalid 130 are the enricher's guesses, and they would have bounced from the main domain.
