A data enrichment tool takes a partial record, such as an email, a domain or a name and company, and appends fields to it: company size, industry, revenue, tech stack, job title, work email, phone, social profiles. Enrichment fills gaps; it does not confirm that the appended email works. Across the leading enrichment vendors, 10 to 25% of appended emails are invalid at the moment of export, so verification is the step that follows enrichment, not a substitute for it.
Company fields from a domain: headcount, industry, revenue band, HQ, founding year, funding. Sources are company registries, LinkedIn company pages, Crunchbase and web crawls. Errors are staleness (headcount from last year) and entity confusion (the wrong 'Acme' matched).
What the company runs: CRM, analytics, cloud, payments, marketing tools. Sources are DNS records, HTML fingerprints, job posts. Errors are detection gaps (tools behind a login) and lag (the tool was replaced; the fingerprint remains).
Work email, direct dial, mobile, title, seniority. Sources are contributed address books, scraped signatures, pattern inference, partner data. This is where the error is measurable in bounces, and where this page spends its tables.
Email accuracy is the share of appended addresses that verify as deliverable at export time, from the ranges BounceZero has published; vendor-reported means the vendor's own figure. Coverage and refresh claims are vendor-reported throughout.
| Tool | Enriches | How it sources contacts | Email accuracy | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Clay | All three, via waterfall | Chains 75-plus providers, stops at first hit | 70 to 80% (find rate 80 to 92%) | Ops teams building enrichment workflows |
| Apollo | Firmographic, technographic, contact | Contributed network plus pattern inference | 70 to 82% | Sourcing and enrichment in one place |
| ZoomInfo | All three, plus org charts and intent | Contributed network, research team, scraping | Vendor-reported 90%-plus | Enterprise US sales teams |
| Cognism | Contact (phone-verified mobiles), firmographic | Research team, partner data, EU compliance focus | Vendor-reported; mobile accuracy is the product | EU and UK outbound |

| People Data Labs | Person and company records via API | Licensed and public datasets, 1.5B-plus person records (vendor-reported) | Vendor-reported; emails are a data field, not a product promise | Developers building their own enrichment |
| FullContact | Identity resolution, consumer and B2B | Identity graph | Vendor-reported | Marketing identity use cases |
| Crunchbase | Firmographic (funding, people) | Editorial plus contributed | n/a | Funding-triggered prospecting |

Clay's find rate is the highest because it asks every provider; its accuracy is not the highest because the first answer wins. A verification step after the waterfall is what turns the find rate into deliverable contacts.
Enrichment answers 'what else do we know about this record'. Verification answers 'does this mailbox accept mail right now'. The enrichment vendors do run checks, at indexing time: syntax, MX, and in some cases an SMTP probe when the record was built. The record then sits in the database while the person changes jobs, the company migrates mail providers, or the domain turns catch-all. B2B addresses decay fast, with only 19.2% of addresses still valid 90 days after verification in the BounceZero decay study; the badge stays green.
The second difference is what the tool does when it cannot be sure. An enrichment waterfall returns the best guess it has, because a blank cell looks like failure. A verifier that is honest returns unknown: in the BounceZero corpus, April to October 2026, 27% of non-freemail (business and ISP) addresses could not be confirmed because ISP and corporate gateways block probes. Those addresses are not invalid, but they are not safe for cold volume either, and only a verifier tells you which rows they are.
The third is catch-all. A pattern-inferred address on a catch-all domain passes the enrichment tool's own check because the server accepts everything. 2.3% of non-freemail (business and ISP) addresses sat on catch-all domains in the corpus, 12.4% on .org. Enrichment counts them as found; verification labels them so they can be routed to a warm sequence.

| .com | 2,158,955 | 16.4% | 4.4% | 14.7% | 59.7% |

Apollo-specific: in a 100,000-contact study of Apollo exports, 5.8% of addresses were invalid at export and a further 18.4% were catch-all, an effective bounce exposure of 15 to 20% once catch-all bounce rates are counted time. Details on the Apollo accuracy study.
Domain for company enrichment, LinkedIn URL for person enrichment. An email as the input key is weakest: if it is wrong, every appended field is about the wrong person.
Append headcount, industry and geography, apply the ICP filter, and only then spend contact credits on the rows that survive. This halves the enrichment bill on most lists.
Primary provider by region (Kaspr or Cognism for Europe, Apollo or ZoomInfo for the US), misses to a second provider. In Clay this is one column; without Clay it is two exports.
Bulk or by API, same day. BounceZero returns valid, invalid, catch-all, unknown and role per row, keeps every enriched column, and refunds unknowns. Bulk verification handles up to a million rows per job.
Store the verification status and date on the CRM record. Suppress invalid from every sequence. Route catch-all and unknown to phone and LinkedIn tasks. Re-verify anything older than 90 days before it enters a new sequence.
Breeze Intelligence if you are on HubSpot, Apollo or ZoomInfo otherwise, plus the BounceZero API on record creation so a bad address never enters a sequence. CRM cleaning covers the backlog.
Clay as the orchestration layer with two or three contact providers underneath, verification as the final column. The waterfall maximises find rate; the verification column makes it safe.
People Data Labs or Apollo's API for records, BounceZero's validation API for the email field. Keep the two calls separate so a failed verification does not block the rest of the record.
Cognism or Kaspr for contacts with a compliance trail, and expect a high unknown share on German lists: 41.2% of .de addresses in the corpus could not be confirmed because t-online.de does not answer probes. Plan phone and LinkedIn routing for those rows.

For an ops team building workflows, Clay, because it chains every provider and gives the highest find rate. For a sales team that wants one place to source and enrich, Apollo in the US and Cognism in Europe. For CRM-resident enrichment on HubSpot, Breeze Intelligence. Whichever you choose, verify the appended emails before using them; find rate and accuracy are different numbers.
Not at the time you need it. Enrichment tools check addresses when the record enters their database, which can be months before your export. B2B addresses decay fast, with only 19.2% of addresses still valid 90 days after verification in the BounceZero decay study and the badge does not update. A verifier checks the mailbox when you ask and reports what it could not confirm as unknown rather than guessing.
The leading tools return a deliverable work email 70 to 85% of the time, with the rest invalid or sitting on catch-all domains. In the BounceZero corpus 14.5% of non-freemail (business and ISP) addresses were invalid and 27% could not be confirmed. Phone accuracy is harder to measure; vendors such as Cognism make it their main claim.
When your find rate with one provider falls below about 70% on your segment, yes. A waterfall takes find rate to 80 to 92% by asking every provider. It does not raise accuracy, because the first answer wins, so pair it with a verification column and expect to drop 10 to 25% of what it finds.
Enriching business contacts for a relevant business purpose can rest on legitimate interest if you document it, inform the person where the data came from, honour objections and keep only what you need. Consumer enrichment and bulk retention of personal data are harder to justify. Vendors such as Cognism publish their compliance basis; check it for your jurisdiction.
Upload the enriched export, keep every appended field, get valid, invalid, catch-all and unknown back. 100 free checks a month, unknowns refunded.
