What Is a Sales Accepted Lead (SAL)?

A sales accepted lead is a marketing qualified lead that a salesperson or sales development rep has reviewed and agreed to work. It sits between MQL and SQL and exists to make the handoff explicit: marketing can count what it delivered, sales can count what it accepted, and the gap between the two becomes a measurable number. Acceptance rates of 60 to 90% are typical; lower means the MQL definition is too loose.

How it is measured and used

Acceptance is a yes or no recorded in the CRM, usually within a service-level window of one business day. Two checks happen at that moment: fit against the ideal customer profile, which a rep can judge from the company record, and reachability, which a rep usually judges by whether the first email bounces.

Moving the reachability check earlier, to the form or the import, raises the acceptance rate without changing the lead. A record that would have been rejected after a bounce is never created. The real-time validation API does this at the form.

Example with numbers

Marketing delivers 500 MQLs in a quarter. Sales accepts 360, a 72% rate, and the 140 rejections split into 90 poor fit and 50 unreachable. Validating at the form would have removed most of the 50 before they were counted, lifting the acceptance rate to about 80% and ending one recurring argument between the two teams.
